EDUC 6164 - Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions

It is amazing that after reading about microaggression this week that you see it everywhere. Personally, I did not witness any in my daily interactions with others this week. However, I recall reading a tv station from St. Louis, MO Facebook page after the police involved shooting in Ferguson, MO. The replies from users were filled with microaggression against both African-Americans and Caucasians. It was disheartening to read the amount of hate in the replies. Recently, we moved out of the St. Louis area to Virginia, and it was hard to see the area so divided. It was hard to read the words from people that could hide behind their computer screens and throw out racist comments. Reading these replies made me realize we have work to do on our road to an equal society. Every person needs to be treated with respect and dignity.   As a society, we need to think before we say something. Many of our statements are based on emotion and can really hurt another person

  1. Hello Tanya I really enjoyed reading your post this week. I really how you explained what micro aggression. I like how you gave your example of your micro aggression you encounter. I agree with you how much hate we see around the world just because of race, gender and religion. I also agree with you on how heartbreaking this can have on a person and their family. This class has open my mind up so much and I have learned so much within the last couple of week. How do you feel about what you see around the world with all this hate crime? I will wait for your reply.

  2. Tanya,
I also feel disappointed with all the hate that goes around behind the screen. we see this kind of microaggression often on facebook and other social media sites, that is what is so powerful about technology these days. This also convinces me more of how we should not introduce so much technology to our children, and we should always be careful of the messages behind the shows and movies we allow them to watch. What is your opinion regarding technology in early childhood education?

  3. Hi Tanya

Microaggression happens every day. You brought up a good example that is going on right now. The replies on the shooting were heart breaking. The things people said sounded so hateful and scary. I agree with you people hide behind a computer and say mean things. It would do the world good if everyone took this class. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  4. Tanya,

I realize it everyday in my interactions with the parents in my school. I wonder if it is because my school is very muli cultural and the town is very small and everyone knows everyone. I also have seen this on television and do not understand why this is still a problem in our society.
